What does it cost to be evaluated?

$250 for all new patients

$150 for follow up visits

How many visits are needed?
Seeing a physician for medical marijuana is like seeing other physicians for consultation. If you receive treatment, the doctor will require follow up visits to make sure the medicine is working optimally and that there are no adverse effects. Most new patients will require a 1 month follow up appointment. Subsequently follow ups may be at 1 and 3 month intervals. Eventually in some cases, if patients are deemed to be stable on their medication a follow up of 3 months or more may be appropriate.
Does insurance pay for evaluation?
No. Unfortunately, at this time insurance does not cover these evaluations. You may contact your insurer for further information.
What is the cost for the medical marijuana?
The cost of medical marijuana is determined by the dispensary. Our understanding is that the average cost is around $100 – $200 per month for most patients, but some patients pay up to $500 or more. The cost of the marijuana is not covered by health insurance or prescription drug plans.
Does every patient who is seen get medical marijuana?

No. Every patient is given an evaluation to see if they qualify and if it is safe for them to receive medical marijuana. Every patient receives a medical opinion regarding suitability for medical marijuana, possible benefits, side effects, and alternative treatments that might be helpful.
Some patients, who qualify for marijuana with may be unable to receive medical marijuana due to a contraindication (an example would be a pregnant patient). Sometimes the doctor requires additional documents to be provided. See our checklist for commonly required documents.

Can I receive medical marijuana for a non qualifying condition like anxiety?
No. In New York State, doctors don’t have autonomy to provide medical marijuana for any condition. A patient must have one of the approved conditions and an associated symptom to qualify. There are no exceptions. Anxiety, glaucoma, or other conditions that might qualify in other states do not currently qualify in New York State under the Compassionate Care Act.
Is Medical Marijuana an effective treatment?
While many patients find medical marijuana to be an effective treatment, it is debatable whether it is considered an experimental treatment, an alternative treatment, or something else. There is great controversy in the medical community about its use. Despite a lot of anecdotal evidence, large studies are still needed before medical marijuana is accepted as an evidence based treatment as other traditional medications.
If I am approved what steps are needed before receiving medical marijuana?
Once the doctor certifies you with New York State, you will receive correspondence to apply for a card from New York State. Once you apply, an ID card will be mailed. You will then be able to purchase a product from a dispensary.

If you aren’t sure take our quick qualification survey and find out.

What documents should I bring to my visit?

The doctor needs to review documentation from other providers that establish a diagnosis. The type of documentation required varies by the type of diagnosis and complaint, but often requires a recent note that lists a diagnosis and prior treatments. If these documents are not available or if additional information is required, then the doctor may provide you with an additional form to be completed by your physician before you are certifed for Medical Marijuana.

The following documentation may be helpful:

  • Recent Medical Note
  • Physicians letter
  • Electrographic study reports (Neuropathy – EMG, Epilepsy – EEG)
  • Imaging reports (MRI, CT scan, PET scan)
  • Pathology reports
  • Diagnostic lab result (HIV)
  • Colonoscopy reports
  • Genetic testing (Huntington’s disease)
